IVF Cycle
A typical IVF cycle involves several key stages designed to maximize the chance of a healthy pregnancy:
Ovarian Stimulation: You will use injectable medications to stimulate the ovaries to grow multiple eggs in a single cycle.
Monitoring: Through regular ultrasounds and blood tests, Michael monitors follicle progress to determine the optimum time for the trigger injection, which matures the eggs.
Egg Collection: Approximately 36 hours after the trigger injection, eggs are collected via an ultrasound-guided vaginal procedure while you are under a light anaesthetic.
Fertilisation & Culture: Eggs are combined with sperm in the laboratory and cultured into a blastocyst (Day 5 embryo).
Understanding Attrition: It is important to understand that there is a natural process of attrition during this week. Not every follicle will contain a mature egg, not every egg will fertilise, and not every embryo will continue to grow to the blastocyst stage.
Freeze First or Fresh Embryo Transfer: Depending on your specific clinical scenario and preferences, you may have a fresh transfer of a Day 5 embryo into the uterus, or all suitable embryos may be frozen for subsequent transfer.
